When I was a kid growing up in the Finger Lakes region of western NY, I was intrigued by my cousin's horse up the hill and over the tracks. I used to ride her bareback in the field with the cows she shared pasture with. The experience eventually led me to study equine husbandry at the University of Findlay, Ohio and graduate with a Bachelor of Science in 1996. Up until 2011, I lived and worked as a rider, trainer, and equine manager in the Hudson Valley of NY. Like most of us I had my share of injuries and chronic pain, however when I was diagnosed in 2008 with a bulging disc in my lumbar spine, the determination to find relief changed my life.
I began to receive regular Massage Therapy and the results were profound. The urge to pass this information on to others consumed my thoughts in such manner that I decided to go back to school for Massage Therapy. In 2011 at Columbia-Greene Community College, NY, I earned an Associates of Applied Science in Massage Therapy with 1000 hours of study. I then went on to become Nationally Board Certified in Massage & Bodywork (BCTMB), a Medical Massage Practitioner (MMP), and a certified Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) under Joseph Muscolino, DC. Most recently I became a certified third generation classical mat Pilates instructor, and am now an apprentice in the Pilates apparatus program, with Simona Cipriani at the Art of Control, in Stamford, CT.
When I moved to Vermont in 2011, I didn't realize the impact that my career change would have. People have told me that I “geek out” when it comes to the study of anatomy. What I am consistently more fascinated with however is how anatomical structures work, for instance the Physiology and Kinesiology of those structures within our musculoskeletal systems. This fascination motivated me to educate myself even further with the experience of enrolling in an intensive six day cadaver dissection lab at the University of Bridgeport, CT in 2014, two observational cadaver labs at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, NH in 2017 & 2018, and another six day intensive fresh-tissue cadaver lab at the Institute of Anatomical Research in Colorado Springs, CO in August of 2019.
We are all unique and we should each have the opportunity to understand how healthy soft tissues should move and feel within our own bodies. We should also begin to develop an awareness that can help prevent injury from occurring. With my own experiences receiving Massage Therapy and having lived through chronic back pain, ACL knee surgery, ankle surgery and maintaining an active lifestyle, I am passionate to teach my clients how to develop this awareness.
As an Orthopedic Massage Therapist I have consistently learned from my clients' lives, injuries and character. Above all else, I will most definitely work within the scope of my practice, refer you if necessary to my network of health care professionals, never diagnose, and always treat you in a non-discriminatory way.
In my free time you may find me hiking, skiing, practicing Pilates, and cooking fresh food :)
